Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time

The Gould Piano Trio, based in Wales, is one of Europe’s most sought-after piano trios. Joined by Robert Plane, Principal Clarinettist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, they perform Messiaen’s epic, transcendental masterpiece The Quartet for the End of Time (written and first performed at a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany) and the premiere of a new Swansea International Festival co-commission (with other partners including Wigmore Hall), of Four Fables by acclaimed Welsh composer Huw Watkins. The festival is grateful to Tŷ Cerdd for its support in commissioning this work, designed to make use of the unusual line-up required for Messiaen’s visionary piece, itself a reflection of the musicians Messiaen found himself held captive with.
